Finding Cụ Rùa

In the murky waters of Hoan Kiem Lake, lived a giant turtle named Cụ Rùa. Revered by the Vietnamese, many believe the cryptic creature to be the same mythical turtle that helped a Vietnamese king fend off the Chinese nearly six centuries ago. However, the much beloved Cụ Rùa was found dead on 19 January 2016. Experts believe that Cụ Rùa belongs to a species called the Yangtze giant softshell turtle, of which there are now only 3 known living specimens left in the world. Cụ Rùa is now preserved and housed in Ngoc Son Temple which lies in Hoan Kiem lake for public viewing.

Finding Cụ Rùa is a short film conceived during a 4 week residency in Hanoi. Through an imagined perspective of the iconic turtle, the artwork reflects on my views on the relationship between the now deceased turtle, and hanoians.
